“Egg freezing represents an insurance policy for motherhood, which the most educated and ambitious women are going to start using.” With these words, the scientist Carl Djerassi, creator of the contraceptive pill, recently acknowledged the option of egg freezing, describing it as “another step forward for women.”
The man regarded as the father of the first women’s revolution with the creation of the Pill, now predicts that in the next 30 years “there will be a drastic change in sexual reproduction.” And the vitrification of oocytes is a major step forward in women’s lives, by means of which they can preserve their fertility intact until the day they wish to get pregnant.
“Currently, the best reproductive years for most women, coincide with the time they are fighting for a place in the working or academic world”, said Djerassi, on a recent visit to Spain. “With the arrival of vitrification, women can have children later in life, with the reassurance that they will be born healthy and strong,” he added. “Egg freezing allows women to use their own eggs after a few years without their having aged, and thus avoid losing their quality.”
Cheating the biological clock
Egg freezing allows women to slow the passage of time and forget about the pressure of the biological clock. “It is an insurance policy for motherhood,” explained the scientist. “Women can now cheat their biological clock and postpone the moment of becoming mothers with no risk of having fertility problems”.
